Why We Focus Exclusively on the “Big 5” Leagues

This Is Why We Focus Exclusively On The Big 5 Leagues

When we developed the NVC Ratings system, we made a clear decision: we focus only on Europe’s Big 5 leagues — the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1. Many other leagues around the world produce excellent football. However, limiting our scope to these five competitions allows us to maintain higher data quality, stronger consistency, and more reliable comparisons.

Better Data Quality And Consistency

The Big 5 leagues offer the most complete and consistent advanced data. Event data, tracking data, and performance metrics are recorded to a high standard in almost every match. This consistency is essential for a normalization-based system like NVC.

In many other leagues, data coverage can be incomplete or less detailed. Mixing high-quality and lower-quality data sources would reduce the accuracy of our adjustments for league strength and opponent quality. By staying within the Big 5, we keep the foundation of the NVC football rating methodology as clean as possible.

Stronger Cross-League Comparisons

Players move frequently between the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1. This creates a natural network of performance data that helps us calibrate league strength more accurately.

When a player transfers from one Big 5 league to another, we can observe how their output changes. These real-world movements improve the conversion factors we use in the NVC system. Expanding into leagues with fewer transfers and less comparable data would weaken this calibration process.

Tactical And Competitive Standard

The Big 5 leagues generally represent the highest competitive and tactical level in club football. The intensity, pressing standards, and tactical organization in these competitions set a clear benchmark.

Measuring players against this standard produces ratings that are more meaningful for most fans and analysts. It also avoids the problem of inflated numbers that can appear in lower-intensity environments.

Avoiding Low-Sample Noise

Some leagues outside the Big 5 have fewer matches, less consistent data, or smaller sample sizes for certain positions. Including them would introduce more noise into the rankings and make the normalization process less stable.

By focusing on the Big 5, we keep the sample large enough and consistent enough to support reliable weekly updates.

Our Goal Remains Clarity

We built NVC Ratings to offer a clearer and fairer view of player contribution. Restricting the system to the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 helps us deliver on that goal.
