Why we created NVC Ratings

Why We Created NVC Ratings

We created the NVC Ratings system because traditional football statistics fail to tell the full story of player performance. Goals, assists, and even many advanced metrics often ignore important context. As a result, players can look better or worse than they really are depending on the league they play in or the strength of the opposition they face.

Our goal was simple: build a fairer, more consistent way to measure player contribution across Europe’s top five leagues.

Why we created NVC Ratings for fairer football player evaluation

The Problem With Traditional Statistics

Raw numbers can mislead. A striker who scores 15 goals in a weaker league may appear more productive than a striker who scores 12 goals in a much stronger league. In reality, the second player often contributes more value. The same issue appears with progressive passes, chances created, and defensive actions.

Most public metrics treat every league and every match as equal. This creates distorted comparisons and makes it harder for fans and analysts to judge true performance.

What We Wanted To Solve

We wanted a system that could answer a clearer question:

How much value does a player actually contribute once we account for the difficulty of the league, the quality of the opposition, and the style of the team?

To answer that question, we developed the NVC (Normalized Value Contribution) Score. It adjusts performance data so that results remain comparable across the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.

A Transparent And Objective Approach

Football analysis works best when it stays objective. We designed the NVC system to remove personal bias as much as possible. The ratings rely on measurable data and clear normalization factors rather than opinions or reputation.

The system also stays easy to understand. A score between 0 and 100 gives fans and analysts a simple reference point while still reflecting deeper performance data.

How NVC Differs From Other Approaches

Many existing tools focus on single-match ratings or individual actions. Systems such as WhoScored, FotMob, and Sofascore do an excellent job of evaluating performances in real time. VAEP goes further by valuing every on-ball action according to its impact on scoring and conceding probability.

The NVC Ratings system serves a different purpose. It focuses on longer-term contribution and cross-league fairness. By normalizing for league strength and opposition quality, it allows more meaningful comparisons between players in different competitions.

Who Benefits From NVC Ratings

We built this system for:

  • Fans who want a clearer picture of player value
  • Analysts who compare players across different leagues
  • Anyone who feels limited by raw statistics that ignore context

You can explore the current rankings on the main NVC Player Rankings page. For a full technical explanation, visit our Methodology page. You can also read a simpler overview on the What is NVC? page.

Looking Ahead

We will continue to refine the NVC football rating methodology as new data becomes available. Our aim remains the same: provide a fair, transparent, and useful tool that helps people understand player performance more clearly.
